Software that automates cash flow forecasting and shows an always-current available cash balance falls into three groups: bank-connected cash forecasting tools, cash management inside your ERP, and business planning platforms that build cash from the same model as your P&L and balance sheet. "Always current" depends on two things: how often each tool refreshes your balances, and how it treats payments you have committed that the bank has not yet cleared. This guide compares eight options, shows what each vendor says it connects to, and gives you a routine for keeping the number current once it is live.
Abacum is the AI-native business planning platform for scaling enterprises. It brings all your data, business logic and business context into one governed place.
Key takeaways
Available cash is the balance you can spend today after holds and committed payments. Cash position is the balance across accounts. Liquidity adds undrawn committed credit, such as a revolver.
A cash number is only as current as its slowest source. Check the refresh cadence for banks, your ERP and your payroll calendar separately.
Bank-connected tools are built for daily visibility. Planning platforms are built to show how cash moves when the plan changes. Most finance teams need both views drawn from the same actuals.
Ask every vendor which banks and which accounting systems it connects to, and how often each source refreshes. Vendor sites describe integrations differently, so confirm coverage for your own accounts on a call.
Keep the 13-week forecast and the annual plan on the same actuals so they never disagree on opening cash.
What "always-current available cash" means
Three terms get used interchangeably, and they are three different numbers.
Cash position: the sum of balances across all bank accounts and entities at a point in time.
Available cash: cash position minus payments you have already committed but that have not cleared, such as scheduled payroll, approved vendor payments and tax dates.
Liquidity: available cash plus undrawn committed credit.
When a finance leader asks for an always-current available cash balance, they usually mean the second number, refreshed often enough to approve a payment or fund payroll without a spreadsheet check. That takes two inputs: current balances, and a live view of what is already spoken for.
What software can automate cash flow forecasting and show an always-current available cash balance?
Three types of tools do this job, and they answer different questions.
Type | What it does best | Examples |
|---|---|---|
Bank-connected cash forecasting | Reads balances from connected accounts and projects the next weeks | Float, Cash Flow Frog, Nomentia, HighRadius |
Cash management inside the ERP | Works from AP, AR and bank data in the accounting system | Centime |
Business planning platforms | Build cash from the same model as the P&L and balance sheet, so a plan change moves cash | Abacum, Planful, Datarails |

How bank-connected tools and planning platforms differ
Starting point. Bank-connected tools start from the balance and project forward. Planning platforms start from the plan and show what it does to cash.
Question answered. Bank-connected tools answer "what can we spend today?" Planning platforms answer "what happens to cash if hiring, revenue or collections change?"
Where the number lives. In a planning platform, cash sits in the same model as the P&L and balance sheet, so the board pack and the cash view cannot disagree.
Cadence. Bank-connected tools lean daily. Planning platforms run weekly and monthly reviews, which is how most teams steer the business.
How to keep available cash current: a seven-step routine
List every account that holds material cash across entities and banks, and record which ones feed your tool.
Set a refresh cadence per source. Banks, ERP actuals and payroll calendars refresh on different schedules, and the slowest one sets the age of your number.
Separate cleared from committed. Show bank balances and scheduled outflows side by side so available cash is a calculation, not a guess.
Review daily for payment approvals and weekly for the 13-week forecast. Match the review to the decision it supports.
Run one set of actuals for both horizons. The 13-week view and the 12 to 36 month plan should draw on the same actuals. Our 13-week cash flow guide shows how to build the weekly view.
Update assumptions when actuals disagree. If customers pay later than forecast, change the assumption instead of carrying the variance.
Document the method. Write down which accounts are included, how holds are treated and who owns each source, so the number survives team changes.
Where Abacum fits
Abacum builds the P&L, balance sheet and cash flow statement from live ERP actuals and keeps revenue, hiring and cash scenarios in the same connected model. You plan, forecast and report at weekly granularity, so finance can steer the business every week instead of reporting on it every quarter. Roll-ups across entities use a dimension-based model, with currency translated at the FX rates you set.
A few specifics matter for a cash audience:
One plan, one set of numbers. Reports update from connected systems, so the cash view and the board pack draw on the same figures.
Scenarios that reach cash. Base, bull and bear cases are built off the same base version. Scenario Studio works backward from a target: you set the outcome and limits on any input, and goal seek finds the inputs that get there, with every assumption visible and every adjustment auditable.
AI you can audit. Every output links back to its source data, its assumptions and the action that produced it. More than 85% of our customers use AI in Abacum every month (Abacum customer usage, October 2026).
A cash model without the build. AI Modeler lets you describe the model you need in plain language, or bring the spreadsheet you already built, and get a working model in minutes. You can add a product line, a section or new variables by asking, even in models you inherited, and you can ask what drives any model, line by line, before the board meeting. The agent proposes, the planning engine calculates, and finance approves every change to reported figures. Nothing saves until you approve. AI Modeler is standard functionality, included with the platform, with no credits, no meter and no hidden fees.
If your priority is balances pulled straight from bank portals for same-day treasury execution, start with the bank-connected tools above, and ask every vendor, including us, which banks and which refresh cadence they support for your accounts. If your priority is a cash number that moves with the plan and reconciles to the board pack, that is the job we built Abacum for. Implementation is finance-owned and runs six to nine weeks, depending on data complexity, entity count and workflows.
Bring a planning scenario and the reports your leadership expects, and we'll build a model around them in the call. Book a demo.
