To choose reliable software for connected financial planning, test every vendor on five things: how it connects to your systems, whether it reconciles your budget, forecast, and actuals, who owns the models, whether outputs are traceable, and how governance holds as more teams plan. This checklist gives you 12 questions to ask before you shortlist any vendor, so you can make a defensible decision in 2026.
You are probably running an evaluation because your plan lives in too many files, and you need a tool your CFO, your IT team, and your budget owners will all trust. Use the questions below in demos and reference calls. Where it helps, we show how we answer them at Abacum, so you can compare us the same way you compare everyone else.
What connected financial planning software is
Connected financial planning software unifies financial and operational data from across your organization in one planning environment. It connects to your ERP, CRM, HRIS, and other systems, so budgets, forecasts, and actuals share one set of data and logic. When pipeline, hiring, or spend assumptions change, the related plans update from the same model instead of from separate files.

Why scaling finance teams need connected planning in 2026
Three pressures push finance teams toward connected planning:
Decision latency. The time from a variance appearing to someone acting on it is the measure that matters. Manual data pulls stretch it.
Cross-functional dependence. Headcount decisions depend on sales projections and capacity. Connected platforms give RevOps, HR, and finance one source of truth to plan from. See how budgeting and forecasting software updates when revenue assumptions change.
Spreadsheet risk. Formula errors, broken links, and version conflicts are governance risks, not only inefficiencies, as more people plan.
12 questions to ask when evaluating connected planning software
1. Which of our systems do you connect to, and how?
Ask for the specific connectors for your ERP, CRM, and HRIS, and whether each is a native connector, a file load, or middleware. A strong answer names your exact systems and how often data refreshes. How we answer: we ask you to confirm the connectors and data sources you need with our team, and we scope them with you.
2. Which direction does data move?
Clarify what is read from source systems, and what, if anything, writes back. Ask the vendor to show it on your use case, not a generic example.
3. Can our finance team build and change models without consultants?
If every structural change needs professional services, you will face delays and ongoing cost. Ask a non-technical finance user to change a model live. How we answer: Abacum is owned by finance and guided by our in-house FP&A experts instead of third-party consultants. AI Modeler lets you describe a model in plain language, or bring the spreadsheet you already built, and review the working model it builds. The agent proposes, the engine calculates, you approve, and nothing saves until you approve.
4. How do scenarios work?
Ask whether you can hold several scenarios beside the budget, drive them from assumptions, and compare them side by side, and how long a change takes to recalculate on your data.
5. How do you trace a number back to its source?
For audit and board prep, every number needs a trail: who changed it, when, and from what data. Ask how the platform shows data lineage and change history. How we answer: every output links back to its source data, its assumptions, and the action that produced it. We call it a glass box, not a black box.
6. What does implementation involve for an organization like ours?
Ask for timelines from comparable customers, with a similar ERP and number of entities, not generic ranges. How we answer: Abacum is designed to go live in weeks, not quarters. Your timeline depends on scope, data readiness, and entities, and we scope it with you.
7. How does pricing change as we grow?
Ask what drives price (users, data volume, modules) and request a scenario at your expected scale in two to three years. Ask whether AI features are metered. How we answer: AI Modeler is included with the platform, with no credits, no meter, and no hidden fees.
8. What training and enablement is included?
Clarify what is in the base price, what ongoing enablement exists, and what additional programs cost.
9. How do other departments contribute to the plan?
Check whether RevOps, HR, and budget owners can enter assumptions, review plans, and see their results without finance acting as a go-between. How we answer: budget owners plan in Abacum Spaces with input templates, while finance owns the approvals and the final number. Headcount plans tie HR and finance to the budget.
10. What security documentation can you provide?
Request current security and compliance documentation that fits your industry, not promises of future compliance. Ask how access is scoped by role and by user. How we answer: governance holds at the data layer and the AI layer. Every AI action is scoped and logged. Ask our team for current security documentation.
11. How do product updates affect our models?
Ask how updates are communicated, whether they need action from your team, and how the vendor protects existing models.
12. What does support look like after go-live?
Ask for named resources, review cadences, and escalation paths, and ask the vendor to put them in writing.
Red flags during demos
Clean sample data only. Ask to see messy, incomplete, or conflicting data.
Vague timelines. If a vendor cannot explain how your ERP environment affects the plan, it may lack experience with your systems.
Heavy reliance on services for basic changes. Ask: "Can our team do what you just showed us without your help?"
No live connection to a real system. Ask to see data move from a system like yours.
Dismissive answers on security. Finance data is sensitive, and the answer should be specific.
AI you cannot trace. If the vendor cannot show where an AI answer came from, or who approves changes to reported figures, keep looking. In Abacum, agents propose, the engine calculates, and finance approves every change to reported figures.
How to build your shortlist
Filter on connectivity first. Confirm which tools connect to your ERP, CRM, and HRIS before comparing features.
Separate must-haves from nice-to-haves. Use must-haves to eliminate vendors and nice-to-haves to separate finalists.
Prefer driver-based planning. It links financial outcomes to operational inputs. See our guide to scalable driver-based planning software.
Ask for references with your profile, meaning similar ERP, entities, and planning complexity.
Keep the shortlist to three vendors so the evaluation stays focused.
Run a proof of concept on your own data with your top choice before you commit.
